How can teachers aid in developing problem-solving skills among students?

Each one of us faces some kind of problems on a daily basis, but over the years we have learnt to deal with them.

But students are new to this thing. It is essential to understand the no one is born with problem-solving skills. It is that one skill which is cultivated with more knowledge and practice.

Schools do play a significant role in instilling the skills among students. For example, starting with those tricky questions in Math student will develop the analytical and critical skills.
Often people think that those who are good problem solver usually will be able to solve the complicated problems- which is not always the case-

Students who are new to problem-solving usually get overwhelmed which means they are not aware of how to start with it.

Teachers have to lead them to the process of problem-solving. With something, if they get stuck, they need help initially because they are not particularly aware of the plan of the action.
Students need help in their initial stages of problem-solving which means teachers need to come to their rescue.

Some essential tips for teachers

Here is how you can help students in developing the skills related to problem-solving:

·         Defining the problem:

People might take as something easy, but actually, it is one of the baselines. Like if you are not able to understand what exactly the problem is then you won’t be able to solve it.
One way to go about it is by reading the questions again and again. Students often just look at the questions and start to think of the answers, but they need to read until the end.

·         Identify the relevant information:

The next thing is to take a closer of the information present in the problem. Students need to clearly identify of what is required in the problem and what is the missing end.
With this step, they are able to work through the problem and would know what exactly they need to do.

·         Encourage them to ask questions:

Another important tip that teachers can use for creating problem-solving skills is motivating them to ask a question.
They are nowhere expert but are in the learning stage, so when you give them the space to ask anything, then they will be able to fill the gaps.

·        Derive possible solutions:

Sometimes we do not see the different ways to tackle a problem. Thus do not set anything rigid for a process.
If they are able to reach the problem with the similar end result, then there is nothing bad. Do not be just that rigid teacher who wants things her way.

·         Practice and Practice!

If there is one thing that helps make the whole process of developing the skill, then it has to be keep on practicing.
British curriculum schools in Dubai stresses on an approach of the problem solving where they ask students to practice as much as they can.
With practice, they will not only develop confidence but also ease the process of problem-solving.
